Council confirms that the reciprocal registration arrangements are to end
The Council of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society has confirmed that the proposed Byelaw alterations ending reciprocal registration agreements with Australia, New Zealand and South Africa should be forwarded to the Privy Council for its approval.
The Secretary and Registrar reported to the August
Council meeting that,
following the gazetting of the proposed amendment in The Pharmaceutical
Journal of 21 April, three objections had been received during the 60-day
consultation period. In addition, the PJ had published four objecting
letters.
A number of Council members expressed concerns but accepted that they
had no choice but to agree the change. They were reminded that the reciprocal
arrangements could be challenged on the basis of the EU directive, that
it was government policy to remove bilateral agreements and that reciprocity
could be challenged on the grounds of discrimination.
The Secretary and Registrar assured the Council that the Society was
continuing to work with pharmacy boards in the countries affected and
was seeking to develop properly evaluated processes to assist the exchange
of pharmacists.
