Prevention is better than cure was the message from the Welsh Executive of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society at the 2005 Three Counties Show, held at Carmarthen Showground on 10 August.

Working in collaboration with the Farmers Union Wales, local pharmacist Richard Evans was on hand to offer health checks to visitors. Giving advice on lifestyle changes, Mr Evans provided farmers and their families with weight and blood pressure checks as well as a chance to discuss other factors used to calculate lifestyle risk scores.

Mr Evans said: “Prevention and early detection of diseases are vital in improving the health of the people of Wales. Farmers seem to be less aware of the benefits certain changes to lifestyle can bring, such as giving up cigarettes and weight loss. Pharmacists are ideally placed to provide advice and support.”

Catherine O’Brien, the Society’s director for Wales said: “Events such as these attract a wide range of visitors including Assembly Members and opinion formers as well as members of the public. This was another ideal opportunity to raise the profile of the pharmacy profession and we have received positive feedback that we are getting our message across.”
