CBT beneficial in IBS

Cognitive behavioural therapy offered additional benefits to therapy with mebeverine alone in 149 patients with irritable bowel syndrome resistant to mebeverine, researchers say.

Patients received six sessions of cognitive behavioural therapy plus mebeverine 270mg three times a day or mebeverine alone. Cognitive behavioural therapy had an initial beneficial effect, reducing mean symptom severity score by 68 points (scale 0 to 500). Benefits persisted for six months but were not significant at 12 months (BMJ 2005;331:435).
