UniChem managing hospital debt

From Mr M. Stephenson

I am responding on behalf of UniChem to Steve Dunn’s comments in the PJ (20 August, p216) regarding hospital finances.

Historically, debt from hospitals has been an issue for wholesalers and there can be no doubt that certain NHS trusts are encountering difficulties with financial management. UniChem has taken proactive action to improve this situation by working closely with its hospital pharmacy customers, monitoring their individual financial status and assisting with cost management. In doing so, we are successfully managing hospital debt control and are not experiencing the same difficulties that we have encountered in the past.

It is certainly the case that many hospital pharmacies have yet to switch to web-based order management systems and this is another area where UniChem is proactively seeking improvement. We have been working in collaboration with the NHS Purchasing and Supply Agency to endorse the pilot of the NHS messaging service, a single portal which will facilitate electronic trading between hospitals and suppliers. Our hope is that this pilot will lead to a more efficient way of working and improve cost control within the hospital arena. UniChem’s intention is to support its hospital pharmacy customers in every way possible to ensure that they can provide a high quality service to the patient.
