Dermatology

Itching question

From Mr J. P. Barker, MRPharmS

Can anyone help me on this one? Last week an eight-year-old girl was brought in by her mother suffering from itchy feet, apparently caused by walking on the local beach. When closely examined there was no apparent rash although the skin was possibly redder than normal with thin red lines under the skin. The itch had kept the child awake at night despite the use of Piriton liquid and Eurax cream. When the patient had been digging with her hands in the sand these had started to itch as well.

Further questioning obtained the information that they were staying in a caravan that was pet (and therefore presumably flea) free. I was also told that the same thing had happened two years ago when they had spent their holiday here. Last year they were in the Padstow area, including beaches, but her feet were fine.

Naturally we are a bit concerned that this should happen on one of the world’s top beaches (according to a recent study).
