Further consultation on Byelaw definitions
The Royal Pharmaceutical Society's Council is consulting on a proposed amendment to the Society's Byelaws to bring the definition of a non-practising pharmacist into line with the new
definition of a practising pharmacist approved by the Council at its August meeting (PJ,
13 August, p199).
The Council decided in August that a reference to “the science
of medicines” should be removed from the current definition of
a practising pharmacist. A proposed new definition was set out in Official
Notice in The Journal of 13 August (p211): “A practising pharmacist
is a member who undertakes any work in, or gives advice in relation to,
the practice of pharmacy or health care.”
The proposed new definition of a non-practising pharmacist is set out
in an Official Notice this week (p296). It reads: “A non-practising
pharmacist is a member who does not engage in pharmacy practice, is not
involved in patient care and does not work in or give advice in relation
to the practice of pharmacy or healthcare.”
Anyone wishing to comment on a proposed Byleaw amendment must do so within
60 days of the date on which the proposal is gazetted in The Journal.
After the 60 days have been completed the Council is asked to confirm
the proposal in the light of the comments received. The proposal, accompanied
by the comments, is then be submitted to the Privy Council for its approval.
