Society summary

Revised leaflet goes to 1,500 new members

A revised version of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society's leaflet for new members is being distributed with their certificates of registration to the 1,567 UK and overseas members who have joined the Society after passing the summer 2005 registration examination.

The leaflet, “Helping pharmacists achieve excellence” (PDF 100K), begins with a welcome paragraph, which reminds the new members of their commitment to meet the profession’s nationally recognised standards of practice.

It goes on to outline the Society’s role in leading, regulating, developing and representing the profession of pharmacy before briefly describing the Council and the roles of the executives in Scotland and Wales.

The leaflet describes how the Society works to maintain public confidence and trust in the profession by always thoroughly investigating complaints about pharmacists or pharmacies. It then describes how the Society supports the profession through its range of information sources, through the development of standards, frameworks and guidance, through special interest groups, and through the advice and guidance offered by its inspectors. The leaflet also outlines how the Society’s continuing professional development scheme helps pharmacists meet their professional responsibility to keep up to date with changes in pharmacy practice, the law relating to pharmacy and the latest knowledge and technology applicable to pharmacy.

Further paragraphs provide an introduction to the Society’s branch and regional network, offer advice on payment of retention fees and summarise the services available to members needing support at times of stress, illness or other hardship.

The leaflet concludes by drawing attention to the Society’s customer service policy, explaining how pharmacists can complain if the Society’s standard of service does not meet their expectations.

Philip Green, the Society’s Deputy Secretary and Registrar and Director of Education and Registration, said: “The leaflet is part of our welcome pack for new members to the Society. It aims to provide new members with an overview of the role and work of the Society as well as how they can get involved in the Society’s branch and regional network.”

The leaflet is available from the Society’s website (PDF 100K) or from the registration department (tel 020 7572 2322).
