Positive results for Exubera

Exubera, an inhaled rapid-acting insulin preparation, is as effective as subcutaneous insulin in achieving glycaemic control in patients with type 1 diabetes, new data show.

In a study of 226 patients, improved glycaemic control was seen with both Exubera and subcutaneous insulin. After 12 weeks HbA1c levels of patients using Exubera dropped from a baseline of 7.5 per cent to 7.1 per cent, compared with 7 per cent in the subcutaneous group.

The researchers say that Exubera was well tolerated with the most common adverse events being hypoglycaemia and cough. It has been submitted to the EMEA for approval.

The results were presented at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes conference this week.
