Anthony Smith has been appointed dean of the School of Pharmacy, University of London, it was announced last week.

Currently head of the department of pharmacy and pharmacology at the University of Bath, he will take up the appointment in spring 2006 following the retirement of Sandy Florence, the current dean, who has held the post since 1989.

Professor Smith completed both his undergraduate degree and a PhD at the University of Bath, before taking postdoctoral posts at Aston University and then at the University of Rochester, New York. He returned to Bath as a lecturer in 1993, became senior lecturer in 1999 and head of department three years ago.

Philip Brown, the School of Pharmacy’s chairman of council, said that Professor Smith will take up the post at a time when there is a great deal to be done at the school. “Not only will the school have to maintain its high rating in the research assessment exercise but also it needs to strengthen its place within the University of London through continued participation in the Bloomsbury Consortium. Crucially, it has to ensure that it continues to provide the range and depth of training needed by the country’s future pharmacists.”
