Council election regulations to be overhauled
The regulations controlling the election of pharmacists to the Royal Pharmaceutical Society's Council are to be overhauled — but not in time for the 2006 election.
At the October
Council meeting, Council members received a paper from
its Governance Committee setting out
possible revised regulations. It was agreed that the revision was too
important to be rushed through in time for implementation
in 2006, and Council members were asked to submit comments for consideration
at the next meeting of the Governance Committee.
The draft revised regulations had been drawn up with advice from an external
consultant, who saw the existing regulations as too sparing in relation
to handling complaints, challenges, problems and alleged irregularities.
Major changes in the draft document reflect the consultant’s view
that the returning officer (who is the Secretary and Registrar) needs
more explicit powers and authority to deal with challenge, response and
decision.
