Labelling

Names on inhalers

From Mrs J. L. Townend, MRPharmS

The half-term newsletter from my daughter’s secondary school includes a message from the school nurse that several unlabelled inhalers have again accumulated in the physical education department, and requests that inhalers brought into school be named. No one carries an inhaler in its box, of course.

During my 20-odd years as a hospital pharmacist I was used to the actual inhaler being labelled rather than the box, but now as a community locum I find that very few pharmacists do this. Obviously it is more time consuming, but perhaps it is worth considering for children of school age. If time does not permit this, or if the inhaler is in a sealed box, then an extra name and address label could be printed off for the parent or teenager to apply to the inhaler at home.

As schools must have to dispose of unlabelled inhalers, this must lead to considerable wastage.
