Medicines use reviews

Uphill struggle

From Mr D. Willcocks, MRPharmS

As somebody who has only just started providing medicines use reviews I read Monty Goldin’s letter (PJ, 22 October, p512) with some dismay. I must admit that, so far, the whole enterprise has been an uphill struggle.

On hearing about the new service, GPs and practice nurses were sceptical and patients bewildered and suspicious. There did not seem to be any publicity or advertising that was convincing. Downloading information and leaflets from the internet took hours. Studying patients’ records and medical histories before review took even more time.

Then, when I got started, four out of the first 20 patients booked in did not show up. This meant that my employer, who was paying another pharmacist to run the pharmacy while I concentrated on MUR, made a net loss.

I had hoped that things could only get better but Mr Goldin’s letter indicates just the opposite.

Before disillusionment sets in, are there any pharmacists achieving professional satisfaction and making a profit out of MUR?
