Controlled drugs

Recording of doctors' names

From E. A. Pries, MRPharmS

Using the new Controlled Drugs register I have found a potential problem. We are required to enter the name and registration number of the doctor writing the prescription. However, as all community pharmacists know, it is usually impossible accurately to read even the “printed” name of hospital doctors.

Since the object of the entry is to help track who wrote the prescription we need to overcome this problem. I suggest that all hospital doctors should be required to rubber stamp their details clearly on the form, with failure to do so requiring us to reject the script.

This should also apply to emergency doctors, locums and partners using forms other than their own.

Ted Pries
