New protease inhibitor

A protease inhibitor licensed to treat multidrug-resistant HIV patients has been launched by Boehringer Ingelheim.

The new drug, called tipranavir (Aptivus), is indicated for combination antiretroviral treatment of HIV-1 infection in highly pre-treated adults with virus resistant to multiple protease inhibitors. The company says that its non-peptidic chemical structure may contribute to its favourable resistance profile.

Tiprinavir is given at a dose of 500mg twice daily, boosted by combining it with low-dose ritonavir.
