Guidance published for community pharmacists on new veterinary medicines regulations
Practice guidance for community pharmacists on the new Veterinary Medicines Regulations have been produced by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society's Practice and Quality Improvement Directorate (see p589 PDF (300K)).
The Veterinary Medicines Regulations 2005, which came into force on 30
October, relate to medicines supplied for animals.
Sue Kilby, the Society’s head of practice, said: “The Medicines
Act will no longer apply to veterinary medicines and this guidance provides
information for pharmacists on what is covered in the new regulations.
This includes information on the new classifications of veterinary medicinal
products, supply under the veterinary cascade, labelling and prescription
requirements, information on what records need to be kept and details
of the annual audit.”
The Society is hosting an evening seminar on veterinary pharmacy, which
will include a presentation on the new regulations by John Fitzgerald,
director of policy at the Veterinary Medicines Directorate, at its London
headquarters on Tuesday 8 November 2005 at 8pm. There will also be presentations
from pharmacists actively involved in veterinary pharmacy to highlight
the opportunities for pharmacists and provide information on how to get
involved.
The guidance is available online.
Pharmacists who want further information about the guidance or who wish
to register
for the seminar should contact Lorraine Fearon (tel 020 7572 2409, e-mail
lorraine.fearon@rpsgb.org).
