New antifungal agent data

Posaconazole (Noxafil), a new triazole antifungal agent, has demonstrated superior efficacy to fluconazole in preventing aspergillosis in allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients with graft versus host disease.

Research involving 600 patients and presented at the Trends in Medical Mycology meeting in Berlin last month showed that it reduced the incidence of aspergillosis and was as effective as fluconazole in preventing invasive fungal infections overall.

The rate of adverse events was similar for both drugs.
