A new information sheet for pharmacists, “Therapeutic and nutritional supplements”,
was launched by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society at a science reception
on 1 November, hosted jointly with Sense About Science.
The information sheet, produced as part of the Society’s “Science
in the high street” campaign, aims to help pharmacists respond
to questions about vitamin and mineral supplements and other nutritional
products.
The new information sheet is to be made available through the science
section of the Society’s website. Also
launched at the reception was a Sense About Science guide for the public
on peer review, “I don’t know what to believe … making
sense of science stories”. The Society was among the organisations
that helped to develop the guide.
The reception was attended by nearly 100 visitors from science, academia
and industry and from professional and scientific organisations. They
were welcomed by the Society’s Vice-President, Gerald Alexander.
Stephen Denyer, who chairs the Society’s Science Committee, told
the reception: “The Society has had an ongoing relationship with
Sense About Science and works to promote science in general and the pharmaceutical
sciences in particular. We work to encourage the infrastructure, the
research and development and the communications that keep our scientific
knowledge to the fore.”
Tracey Brown, director of Sense
About Science, said: “Our relationships
with pharmacists and others at the frontline of science in the public
domain are central to our efforts to encourage evidence-based public
debate, particularly about medical issues. We are delighted with the
positive response from pharmacists to our initiatives to help people
make sense of the many claims about risks and cures.” |
