Chlamydia screening service in Hull rolled out to young men
A chlamydia advice and screening project offered to women through pharmacies in Hull and East Riding has been extended to include testing for the infection in men.
Since November last year, 4,136 women under 25 years have been screened
through the programme, with 346 testing positive for the infection.
Jo Heil, chlamydia nurse co-ordinator for West Hull Primary Care Trust,
said: “Chlamydia screening in pharmacies has been a huge success
so far, and so we’re
delighted to be able to extend the scheme
to test for the infection in young men as well.”
The chlamydia home testing kits are available to all those under 25 years
of age, free of charge, through 25 pharmacies across Hull.
Ray Hall, of Hall’s Pharmacy, is involved in the screening project.
He explained: “For women, it’s just a straightforward swab
test, and for men it’s a simple urine test. The person then sends
the test off to the [project] team and waits for the result, which is
usually available within a week.”
The extension to the service follows the launch of a London-wide
chlamydia screening pilot by the Government and Boots The Chemists last week (PJ,
12 November, p596). |
