Guild calls for pay rise of up to 15 per cent

Special pay increases of up to £4,179 have been called for by the Guild of Healthcare Pharmacists to improve recruitment and retention of hospital pharmacists.

In evidence (Microsoft Word document) to the Nurses and Other Health Professions Pay Review Body (PDF 110K), the GHP calls for a pay increase equivalent to four incremental points for pharmacists in Agenda for Change bands 6 and 7. This would mean an extra £4,179 for band 7 pharmacists and £3,740 for those in band 6. Even so, the maximum band 7 salary after 11 years’ service would still be less than starting salaries for pharmacists in the commercial sector. The guild also called for better pay for band 8 pharmacists, who receive only time off in lieu if they have to work out of normal hours.

It believes that they should be paid in a similar way to senior medical staff, who receive enhanced sessional rates commensurate with their grades.

The guild’s claim sets it at odds with Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown.

Mr Brown has written to all public sector pay review bodies telling them to keep pay settlements within the Government’s 2 per cent inflation target and not to base pay on “the recent temporary rise in inflation”.
