Scope for prescribing by pharmacists is huge

The scope for further development of pharmacist and nurse prescribing is huge, Nigel Crisp, chief executive of the NHS, writes in his six-monthly report this week.

New ways of working, including the community pharmacy contract and the innovative role of infection-control pharmacists in tackling methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections are also benefiting patients, he adds.

“Investment and new contracts are supporting new ways of working which, together with the new IT systems and the spread of best practice, are leading to service improvement and better value for money,” Sir Nigel comments.
