Minister backs careers campaign

Jane Kennedy: there has never been a better time to pursue a pharmacy

Jane Kennedy, the health minister with specific responsibility for pharmacy issues at the Department of Health, has given her endorsement to the Royal Pharmaceutical Society's careers campaign.
The campaign includes a careers website (www.pharmacycareers.org.uk),
a leaflet, “Your future in pharmacy”, and a poster, all launched
in 2005 (PJ, 26 November, p671).
Ms Kennedy said: “I was delighted to be asked to support the Society’s
campaign to provide information about pharmacy careers. There has never
been a better time to pursue a career in pharmacy. Pharmacists’ expanding
clinical roles in both primary and secondary care are transforming practice
and improving the experience of patients. Recent developments, including
expanding the range of services available through community pharmacies,
the creation of consultant pharmacist posts and prescribing by pharmacists,
all support clinical careers. Pharmacists also play vital roles in academia,
training tomorrow’s practitioners and in industry, developing new
and better treatments.
“We are committed to ensuring that pharmacy is an integral part
of the NHS and to maintain this we need to attract young people who are
interested
in both science and the application of their knowledge to improve outcomes
for patients. The website, which the Society has developed, is a valuable
resource. It provides useful information to help with career decisions
and highlights the great diversity of career pathways within pharmacy,
as well as the valuable contribution pharmacists in all areas can make
to patient care.”
Copies of the leaflet and poster can be ordered from the Society’s
careers office (tel 020 7572 2330; e-mail careers@rpsgb.org).
