New Society books provide introduction to sports medicine and IT

New books from the Pharmaceutical Press (the Royal Pharmaceutical Society's publishing arm) provide pharmacists with an introduction to sports medicine and an explanation of information technology in pharmacy.

Sport and exercise for pharmacistsSport and exercise for pharmacists’ has been produced to give pharmacists an introduction to the prevention and treatment of injuries and ailments commonly experienced in sport and exercise. It also provides advice on health promotion and maintenance through an active lifestyle, the risks and benefits of sport and exercise in specific common conditions, and drug use and misuse in sport.

The Society says: “As a result of health promotion and changes in lifestyle, increasing numbers of people are taking part in sporting activities. This [book] will equip pharmacists with the knowledge that they need to provide patients, participating at whatever level, with evidence-based advice on sport and exercise-related health matters.”

The 376-page paperback, which costs £29.95, has been written by pharmacist Steven Kayne, who is an independent pharmacy consultant.

Information technology for pharmacistsThe second book, ‘Information technology for pharmacists’, will help pharmacists make the most of the information technology they face in their day-to-day working lives, says the Society. “It provides a basic understanding of all aspects of computing and how this knowledge can be applied to pharmacy practice. In addition, it gives an overview of electronic information systems and sources relevant to community and hospital pharmacy, and covers key issues such as NHSnet, electronic transfer of prescriptions and electronic patient records and confidentiality. A glossary of computer terms is also included.”

The book is aimed principally at practising pharmacists but is expected to be of value also to preregistration trainees, pharmacy students and IT professionals working in health care.

The 256-page paperback book, costing £26.95, has been written by a pharmacist, Richard Fisher, who is an information technology consultant at Synapse Consulting Ltd.
