Go-ahead for plan to remove Council attendance fee ceiling
The Council of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society is to proceed with a proposal to seek the removal from the Byelaws of a ceiling on the fee payable for attendance at meetings of the Council and its committees.
At the December
Council meeting, the Council was reminded that the proposed
change had been suggested by advisers to the Privy Council when the Council
sought to raise the ceiling earlier in the year. The advisers said that
the level of fees should be a matter for the Society’s members
and not controlled by the Privy Council. The Council therefore dropped
its proposal to raise the limit and gazetted a new Byelaw amendment to
the effect that Council members “shall be entitled to receive a
reasonable fee, which shall be determined by the Council from time to
time by resolution …” (PJ, 22 October, p530).
Because the 60-day gazetting period does not end until 21 December, the
Council agreed that the President should take a final decision if further
comments arrived. So far only one formal submission opposing the amendment
has been received.
The Council also agreed that it would still consult the membership on
proposed changes to the fees. It would use a 60-day gazetting process
as at present and would consider all responses before approving an amended
fee.
