Four more pharmacists are designated as fellows of the Society

Four pharmacists — three of them resident overseas — have been designated as fellows of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society by the Society's panel of fellows.

The four are James McElnay, of Belfast, Northern Ireland, George Lees, of Dunedin, New Zealand, Margaret Malone, of New York, US, and Steven Williams, of Nantwich, Cheshire.

The following brief biographical information is based on material provided by the panel of fellows to assist in identifying the pharmacists concerned. It does not necessarily represent the reasons for their designation as fellows.

Professor McElnay, who registered in 1993, is dean of the faculty of science and agriculture and professor of pharmacy practice at Queen’s University, Belfast. He is a former member of the continuing professional development committee of the College of Pharmacy Practice. A member of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy, he is a former chairman of its outcomes and economic practice research network and its task forces on governance and on science).

Professor Lees, who registered in 1980, is chairman of the department of pharmacology and toxicology and professor of neurology and neuropharmacology at the University of Otago, New Zealand. He is a consultant to Crop & Food Research (NZ), Pacific Edge Biotechnology (NZ) and Schwarz Pharma (Germany).

Dr Malone, who registered in 1981, is professor of pharmacy practice at Albany College of Pharmacy, New York. She is a recipient of the Amgen pharmacy research award for excellence in research in biotechnology. She is a fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy. She specialises in the area of nutrition support and obesity.

Mr Williams is a community pharmacist who registered in 1983. He is superintendent pharmacist and managing director of P. Williams (Chemists) Ltd, Nantwich. A former vice-chairman of the Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee, he is currently chairman of its contract planning committee, a member of its tripartite negotiating team and chairman of its rural committee, which negotiates with dispensing doctors. He sat on the Government’s Advisory Group on the Reform of the NHS (Pharmaceutical Services) Regulations 1992.
