New editions of books on drug interactions and adverse drug reactions

New editions of books on drug interactions and adverse drug reactions are now available from the Pharmaceutical Press (the Royal Pharmaceutical Society's publishing arm).

Stockley's Drug InteractionsStockley’s drug interactions’ has been updated by the Martindale editorial team under Karen Baxter. First published more than 20 years ago, it is designed to provide quick and easy access to clinically relevant, evaluated and evidence-based information on drug interactions. The text is based on many thousands of published clinical papers and reports.

The new edition contains more than 2,800 monographs, typically providing a summary, clinical evidence for the interactions under discussion, the probable mechanism, clinical importance and management. The book covers more than 14,000 interactions between therapeutic drugs, proprietary medicines, herbal medicines, foods, drinks, pesticides and some drugs of abuse. The content is based on published sources and is fully referenced, with a total of 17,600 references.

The 1,216-page hardback book costs £120. The guide is also available electronically as a CD-ROM or online. The CD-ROM costs £120 + £21 VAT. A book and CD-ROM package costs £ 180 + £31.50 VAT. Prices for online use are available on application.

Adverse Drug ReactionsThe other new publication is an extensively revised second edition of ‘Adverse drug reactions’. The book has been expanded to include new chapters on the adverse effects of drugs in pregnancy, on pharmacogenetics and on side effects and patients. Case studies are provided with each chapter.

Describing the book as an “essential and practical guide”, the Pharmaceutical Press says: “Adverse reactions to medicines continue to present a burden on health care, causing considerable morbidity and mortality. As well as knowing about the benefits of medicines, health care professionals need to understand the problem of adverse drug reactions and be aware of how they can be prevented and managed.”

The 496-page paperback book costs £29.95. It is edited by Anne Lee, principal pharmacist with the Scottish Medicines Consortium, National Services Scotland.
