The Council

Members should have a say in Council's fees

From Mr J. E. Balmford, FRPharmS

It was reported after the December 2005 Council meeting that the ceiling on fees payable for attendance at meetings of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s Council would be removed, following a suggestion from the Privy Council that the level of fees should be a matter for members of the Society (PJ, 17 December 2005, p756, and 22 October 2005, p530).

I, being the only pharmacist who wrote regarding this matter to the Privy Council, am strongly opposed to the way in which this matter will be handled in future. The Council is going to decide on its own fees and then gazette them in The Pharmaceutical Journal under Official Notices for 60 days, and then implement them.

I asked the Privy Council to insist that any increases should be approved by an annual general meeting of the Society so that we, the members, would be made well aware of any increase and have a say in determining the figure. I would urge all members to write supporting my suggestion and make members of the Council realise they cannot vote themselves fees with such little regard for the feelings of members of the Society

John E. Balmford
Past President
Royal Pharmaceutical Society
