Blindness risk with use of erectile dysfunction drugs

Men taking the erectile dysfunction medicines sildenafil (Viagra) or tadalafil (Cialis) are at higher risk of non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy if they have a history of myocardial infarction, according to a retrospective case-control study published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology (2006;90:154).

The report recommends that physicians advise patients about this risk before prescribing the phosphodiesterase inhibitor erectile dysfunction drugs.
