Warning on Konakion MM Paediatric dose for neonates

Konakion Neonatal (phytomenadione [vitamin K]) ampoules are to be discontinued on 31 March, but Konakion MM Paediatric can now be used intramuscularly as well as orally, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency announced this week.

Particular care will be required, the MHRA warns, when giving an intramuscular dose of Konakion MM Paediatric. For the prophylaxis of vitamin K deficiency bleeding in healthy neonates of 36 weeks’ gestation or older, a 1mg intramuscular dose of Konakion MM Paediatric will require administration of 0.1ml. This is approximately half of the ampoule volume (a 1mg intramuscular dose of Konakion Neonatal ampoules used almost all of the ampoule volume).
