NHS staff in Wales experience harassment
Over a quarter of NHS staff in Wales have experienced harassment from patients, a survey
has revealed.
NHS Wales’s national staff survey found that 27 per cent of staff
had experienced harassment, bullying or abuse from patients, and that
23 per cent had from relatives of patients. In addition, 16 per cent
said they had suffered physical violence from patients and 5 per cent
had experienced physical violence from patients’ relatives.
The survey also found that over a third of NHS staff in Wales (35 per
cent) have witnessed an error or near miss that could have harmed patients.
Most members of staff (56 per cent) said that the last error or near
miss they had seen had been reported and 58 per cent believed their employer
deals fairly with staff involved in an error. However, 6 per cent admitted
that they did not know how to report errors or near misses and 13 per
cent believed their employer blames or punishes people who make errors.
Around 50 per cent of NHS staff in Wales responded to the survey, which
was carried out between September and December 2005 and was published
this week. It is available from the NHS Wales website |
