Pharmacy not Cinderella of the health service, says Scottish minister

Pharmacy representatives met Scottish First Minister Jack McConnell in February

Pharmacy is no longer the Cinderella of the health service, according to Scottish First Minister Jack McConnell.

Mr McConnell said this to representatives of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s Scottish Department and the Scottish Pharmaceutical General Council at the Labour Party’s Scottish Conference last month. He also expressed support for the profession, saying that now was an exciting time for pharmacy.

Support for pharmacy was also expressed by Scottish health and community care minister Andy Kerr and his deputy, Lewis Macdonald. All three, plus other members of the Scottish Parliament’s health committee visited an exhibition stand arranged jointly by the Society and the SPGC.

Former chairman of the Society’s Scottish Executive Angela Timoney said: “It is important that the Society and the profession continues to engage with parliamentarians and indeed the grass root supporters who help shape political policy.”

Pharmacy representatives at the stand included (pictured left to right) Michael Embrey (SPGC), Dot Anderson (the Society’s Scottish Executive) and David Thomson (the Society’s Council) shown with Jack McConnell (second right).
