Hospital pharmacists encouraged to learn at lunch
“Learning
at lunch” — the Centre for Pharmacy Postgraduate Education hospital pharmacy training programme — was launched earlier this week.
“Learning at lunch” is a new initiative for hospital pharmacists
and registered pharmacy technicians to learn more about particular clinical
topics. As well as the course having a self-learning element, participants
will work in small groups within their own hospital, during a lunchtime
session, with a facilitator.
The programme is being delivered in collaboration with a number of organisations,
including the United Kingdom Clinical Pharmacy Association, the Guild of Healthcare
Pharmacists and the Association of Pharmacy Technicians UK.
Commenting on the launch, Christopher Cutts, director, CPPE, said: “It
meets [hospital pharmacists’] needs in terms of available time to learn,
supports the implementation of the Knowledge and Skills Framework and ensures
their continuing professional development is enjoyable and effective.”
The learning material is linked to the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s CPD
recording format and competency development criteria.
Dr Cutts added that “Learning at lunch” enables pharmacy technicians
to learn in an environment of varying levels of expertise, which also supports
skill mix.
A number of clinical areas will be covered within the programme. The first series
of topics is on cardiovascular disease and is expected to be rolled out nationally
later this month. This follows the success of the pilots that took place in different
hospitals across England in January. Learning materials are to be provided free
of charge to hospital pharmacists and registered pharmacy technicians providing
NHS services in England.
