Pharmacy careers forum to take place alongside BPC 2006

A free forum for those thinking of exploring their career options in pharmacy or the pharmaceutical industry is to take place alongside this year's British Pharmaceutical Conference.

Pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists will be able to meet major employers in pharmacy and the pharmaceutical industry, have their curricula vitae assessed and receive careers advice.

The careers forum will take place across all three days of BPC 2006, which takes place in Manchester from 4 to 6 September. The forum will be part of the conference exhibition — staged for the first time in the G-MEX Centre, adjacent to the conference venue in the Manchester International Convention Centre. Both the careers forum and the exhibition will be free to visitors, but those wishing to attend conference session will need to register and pay as delegates.

The careers forum will be open each day from 10am to 6pm. A special careers forum reception will also be held early on the Tuesday evening.

Job hunters, or people needing careers advice, will be able to get free help in a variety of ways:

· Prearranged interviews with employers Candidates should send CVs before the event to channey@health-links.co.uk. They will be distributed to all exhibitors and interview times will be arranged.

· Speed interviews Private booths will be available for “speed dating” style interviews with potential employers without the need for advance booking.

· Company seminars In seminar booths seating up to 20, companies will profile themselves and discuss the range of career opportunities on offer.

· Online job-hunting Computer terminals will allow delegates to explore job opportunities offered by participating companies and to access job opportunities posted on the BPC 2006 website.

· Networking areas Specially designated spaces will allow delegates to sit and discuss opportunities informally with employers over a cup of coffee.

Royal Pharmaceutical Society Council member Colin Ranshaw, who chairs the Society’s Conference Committee, said: “In response to feedback from delegates and sponsors I am delighted that we are able to bring the first BPC Careers Forum to Manchester in 2006.”

Chris Doherty, vice-president, pharmaceutical and analytical R&D at Astra Zeneca, the founder sponsor of the careers forum, said: “We applaud the Society’s desire to promote the pharmaceutical industry as an exciting careers option for British life science graduates and are delighted to offer our full support. We hope the careers forum will develop into the key recruiting conference for pharmaceutical development skills in the UK.”

Steve Churton, assistant pharmacy superintendent at Boots The Chemists, the lead sponsor for BPC 2006, said: “Boots welcomes this important development. We believe that BPC is the right place to highlight opportunities within UK pharmacy. Never has there been a more exciting time for the pharmacy profession, and BPC presents an ideal opportunity for those considering their future careers to explore the possibilities with potential employers.”

Booking and programme information is available from the conference website (www.bpc2006.org) or from Angela Lyons at Health Links (tel 0121 248 3399).
