Boots/UniChem merger

Ideal opportunity to rekindle independent ownership

From Mr E. Opaleke, MRPharmS

I write with regards to the recent merger proposal between Alliance-Unichem and Boots. It is expected that some stores will be sold off, especially where their presence may be anti-competitive. I hope both companies will use this divestment to show their commitment to the foot marshalls of the pharmacy profession, by providing opportunities for employees and locum pharmacists to enter into ownership schemes that will enable enhanced commitment to the new pharmacy contract and patient care.

This is an ideal opportunity to reinvigorate a part of the pharmacy work force that may be feeling disillusioned by a lack of opportunity. It gives these pharmacists a chance to buy into ownership without them having to pay extortionate prices, because these businesses need development to take advantage of opportunities to add value provided by the new contract. It will be good news for me personally if I am given a chance to be an owner pharmacist of one of these proposed divestments.

Emmanuel Opaleke
South Harrow, Middlesex
