New Society CD inspections to start on 1 April

Royal Pharmaceutical Society inspections of the handling of Controlled Drugs by community pharmacies will start on 1 April.

New governance arrangements for CDs in England (PDF 3.3MB) come into effect on that date, following the Department of Health’s response to the recommendations of the Shipman Inquiry.

All health care organisations, including community pharmacies, will have to make declarations at least every two years of whether or not they keep CDs. They will need to explain any seemingly unusual patterns of prescribing or supply.

Community pharmacies will have to send the declarations to the Royal Pharmaceutical Society; NHS trusts and other private and voluntary sector organisations will have to send them to the Healthcare Commission.

The Society is expected to build its CD role into its routine inspections of community pharmacies and will send the necessary declaration forms to pharmacies when they are due for inspection.

NHS trusts will be able to ask the Society to carry out special inspections of hospital pharmacy departments if there are concerns. Trusts will have to pay for this service.
