East London contractors form a new LPC

Pharmacy contractors in London's City and Hackney Primary Care Trust area have decided to break away from North East London Local Pharmaceutical Committee and set up a new LPC for themselves.

The move has the support of 92 per cent of contractors in the area. None of the remaining 8 per cent has objected to the plan.

Elections will take place under the oversight of the PCT and the Electoral Reform Society. The new LPC is expected to take office from 1 April and is expected to adopt the Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee’s model constitution for LPCs.

Dilip Chauhan, spokesman for a group of four independent contractors which is leading the move, said: “Our reason for doing this? It’s solely for the benefit of contractors.”

He added that the move had not been prompted by members of the Company Chemists Association and that it meant that local pharmacies would be able to move forwards on many agendas.

“It’s a pragmatic approach for the best outcome for contractors,” Mr Chauhan said.

Gary Boorman, chairman, NEL LPC, said: “We’re not disappointed and we wish them luck.”

Correction
Gary Boorman said that the North East London Local Pharmaceutical Committee was “naturally disappointed” at the decision of contractors in City and Hackney Primary Care Trust to establish their own LPC and not as reported.
