Tributes
Hudson In a tribute to the
late Derek
Hudson , ROBIN HERBERT (chairman, Guernsey branch) writes:
Derek
Hudson registered in
July 1957 and worked for Boots in Blackpool before moving to Guernsey
in 1958 to work for Stonelakes Ltd, where he remained for 42 years until
his retirement in 2000. He spent 35 years as manager of Stonelakes pharmacy
at St Sampsons. It was said that he only had two days’ sickness
during that time.
He was an active member of the local branch of the Society, serving on
the committee for 40 years as treasurer, secretary and then chairman.
He was a keen gardener,
always proud to show visitors his extensive range of flowers and vegetables.
He was an active member of Guernsey Motor Cycle and Car Club and regularly competed
or officiated at hill climbs and motor-cross events.
He will be sadly missed by his colleagues. Our thoughts are with his wife Jean
and daughter Karen.
Lowes In a tribute to the late Barry
Lowes (PJ, 25 February, p250),
ELAINE SMITH writes: I was so sorry to hear of the sudden death of Barry
Lowes in hospital on 16 February in Hartlepool. For most of his career
Barry was the owner proprietor of Lowes Pharmacy, Fens, and this is where
my memories of him are based. He was a truly inspirational pharmacist
and his untimely death is a great loss to the profession. It was he who
helped me choose pharmacy as a career and sent me books to which I still
occasionally refer today.
Although I did not follow him into community pharmacy he remained extremely
interested in my work as a specialist women and children’s hospital pharmacist.
I will always be truly grateful to him for his encouragement.
Barry showed great dedication and commitment to his patients. He always had
time for them and counselled them on the use of their medicines, long before
this became fashionable.
It was a privilege to have known Barry and to have him as a role model, a colleague
and a friend. He was a perfect gentleman and modest about his achievements,
never pursuing recognition. Locally, many people will know of his successes
and will remember the impact he had on their lives.
My sympathy goes to his wife Betty, his son David and daughter Wendy and their
family. Barry will be so sadly missed.
