Tribute
Jenkins In a tribute to
the late Edwin
Willard Jenkins (PJ, 11 March,
p303), DENNIS SMITH writes:
I was saddened by the news of the death of
Edwin Jenkins, who was a valued colleague and friend for more than 55
years. He qualified via the pharmaceutical chemist examination shortly
before the 1939–45 war and served as a pharmacy in the Royal Navy
during that conflict.
He was subsequently appointed chief pharmacist at the Royal South Hants
Hospital, Southampton, and continued in that post until retiring in 1982.
He was a congenial
and helpful person and quickly established good relations with almost everyone
he met and this helped him to establish an efficient pharmaceutical service in
the hospital.
I first met Edwin when I took up a chief pharmacist post in Bournemouth and he
contacted me to welcome me to the area. Meetings of the Wessex branch of the
Guild of Public Pharmacists were held in Southampton and we met on these occasions
and at other pharmaceutical gatherings such as weekend schools and conferences.
My wife and I frequently enjoyed the hospitality of Edwin and his wife Pat.
Although we had not met for several years, we had lengthy telephone conversations
from time to time. The main topic would be the pharmaceutical service, in which
Edwin continued to take a keen interest. The last of these conversations took
place only a few days before his tragic death in a fall.
I extend my sincere condolences and sympathy to his widow Pat. |
