E-learning support tool for John Moores students

Pharmacy students at John Moores University in Liverpool are to benefit from an electronic decision support tool.

EMIS has been invited to trial its Mentor system for lecturers and students as an extension to the school of chemistry and pharmacy’s current computer aided learning programme.

Janet Krska, professor of pharmacy practice at the school, said: “In the assessment of the Mentor system, over 250 students will use it to answer a range of clinical questions that may be faced by a practising pharmacist. We will be testing whether the system will enable students to answer the questions more quickly and thoroughly, obtaining a more rounded clinical view of patient problems.”

The system will provide pharmacy students with access to over 84,000 inter-related medical terms including symptoms, signs and treatments. When users enter patient symptoms it provides possible diagnoses, prompts for further questioning and articles and research papers for further reading.

Gordon Brooks, head of the unit that created and is supplying the Mentor system to JMU, explained that Mentor is already used by GPs, adding that he hoped the tool would become a valuable support tool for pharmacists in the future.
