First UK avian influenza case confirmed in Scotland

Fears of an avian influenza outbreak in Scotland appeared to be diminishing as The Journal went to press. On 6 April, the UK’s first case of H5N1 avian influenza was confirmed in a dead swan found at Cellardyke harbour in Fife. Since then, a number of dead birds have been analysed but none has tested positive for H5N1.

The Scottish and UK chief veterinary officers said in a statement last week that the situation does not represent a public health concern.
