Council approves initial consultation on principles of pharmacy education
CORRECTION (29 April 2006)
The suggestion (that the Council should give
further consideration to the Society introducing an accreditation scheme
for continuing education providers) was REJECTED
The Council has approved a preliminary consultation on the principles
of pharmacy education and training to provide a framework for all subsequent
phases of the Society’s “Fit for the future” programme.
At the April Council
meeting, the Council approved a proposal for an
initial exercise to consult funders, providers and students/trainees
regarding the development and adoption of a set of high-level principles
of pharmacy education and training.
These principles would guide the development and review of pharmacy education
and training generally, and specifically the Society’s review of
its own education policy and standards.
The consultation would probably be launched in May. The consultation
document would set out draft principles covering areas such as the selection
of students/trainees, curriculum, assessment, fitness to practise, teaching
and training, resources and quality assurance.
In each area the document would ask about other principles that might
be applied and about barriers that might prevent any principle being
applied in all areas of pharmacy education and training.
