Strategic health authorities to be reduced to 10

The number of strategic health authorities in England will be reduced from 28 to 10 from 1 July, Secretary of State for Health Patricia Hewitt announced last week.

The reconfigured SHAs (pictured below) will be better placed to oversee and support the development of more strategic primary care trusts and the move towards NHS Foundation Trusts, says the Department of Health. It adds that joint working between health and local government agencies will be improved significantly.

Details of the reconfiguration of PCTs are expected to be announced shortly.
