Students question status quo over registration/membership
The link between registration as a pharmacist and membership of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society may be broken, according to students at the British
Pharmaceutical Students' Association annual conference held in Bradford last week.
Chris Barnes, a fifth-year pharmacy student from Bradford University,
proposed a motion advocating the status quo between registration and
Society membership. He argued that the value of the MRPharmS title would
be jeopardised, along with public safety, if the functions were to be
separated. “Someone who has been struck off the Register for a
serious crime could still use the title MRPharmS and, although they would
not be able to practise as a pharmacist, they may still be able to obtain
employment with a degree of responsibility,” he said.
However, Nicola Shaw, public relations officer and a fourth-year student
at Bradford, said that she did not support the motion since there was
a possibility that removing the link could result in a better arrangement
than the status quo. She persuaded the majority of members present and
the proposed motion was not carried through to BPSA policy.

A majority of the delegates abstained from the vote on this motion, so it was not carried. Nicola Shaw spoke for the abstentions and not as reported. |
