EHC supply stance loses Tesco a pharmacy contract

Tesco has been refused a superstore pharmacy contract because it will not supply emergency hormonal contraception to girls under 16 years of age.

The company wanted a contract at a large retail development exempt from the necessary or desirable test in Wilmslow, Cheshire, but told East Cheshire Primary Care Trust that it would not supply EHC to under-16-year-olds, as required by the PCT’s directed enhanced service specification.

The PCT refused the contract and Tesco appealed to the Family Health Services Appeal Unit. The appeal was rejected.
