Nazir Hussain (left) discusses pharmacist prescribing with Patricia Hewitt (right)

Health secretary Patricia Hewitt visited Dudley Beacon & Castle Primary Care Trust last week and met practice-based pharmacist Nazir Hussain.

Mr Hussain is a supplementary prescriber, predominantly working with patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. At one practice, Mr Hussain’s work has been credited with saving almost £25,000 over the past year, in addition to £93,500 in the previous year. In the past two years, the PCT has saved £1.65m from its prescribing budgets.
