Woman candidate tops poll in Council election
Dorothy Drury, a locum pharmacist in community practice, received the most votes in this year's election of members of the Council of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society. Having already been on the Council
for a year, Mrs Drury, the only woman candidate, has been re-elected
along with Douglas Simpson, a Council member since 2003. Mrs Drury
and Mr Simpson are joined by new members David Carter, Brian Curwain
and Andrew Gush.
Mr Carter, from South Shields, is managing director and superintendent
pharmacist of D. L. Carter & Son Ltd and vice-chairman of the Society’s
Sunderland branch.
Dr Curwain, of Christchurch, Dorset, is chief pharmacist and research
and development lead, New Forest Primary Care Trust, and Mr Gush, of
Porthcawl, is a pharmacy business consultant and locum pharmacist.
Three candidates were unsuccessful. Andrew McCoig, a community pharmacist,
has lost his seat after a year on the Society’s Council. Pradip
Patel, pharmacy superintendent for Boots The Chemists, and Chris Cooper,
health care technology programme director for Boots The Chemists, were
seeking to be elected on to Council for the first time.
Out of the 45,742 voting papers issued, 9,720 were returned, 64 of which
were disallowed as invalid. The percentage of voting papers returned
was 21.25 per cent compared with 21.8 per cent in 2005 and 22.8 per cent
in 2004.
