New IV antibiotic launched

Some complicated infections in adults can now be treated by a new intravenous antibiotic launched by Wyeth.

Tygacil (tigecycline) can be used for the treatment of complicated skin, soft tissue and intra-abdominal infections. The recommended dose is 100mg initially, followed by 50mg every 12 hours for five to 14 days, administered by intravenous injection over 30–60 minutes.

Tygacil is a glycylcycline antibiotic, which inhibits protein translation in bacteria by binding to ribosomal subunits and blocking entry of amino-acyl transfer RNA molecules into ribosomes. This prevents incorportation of amino acid residues into elongating peptide chains.
