Age-related macular degeneration treatment launched

Patients with neovascular (wet) age-related macular degeneration (AMD) — a chronic condition causing progessive loss of central vision — may obtain benefit from a new drug, pegaptanib (Macugen), launched by Pfizer. Pegaptanib binds to and inhibits the activity of extracellular vascular endothelial growth factor, a protein responsible for processes that are thought to contribute to the wet form of AMD. The drug is administered by intravitreal injection every six weeks.
