SMC advice comes first

NHS boards in Scotland have been reminded that the Scottish Medicines Consortium remains the main source of advice in Scotland on newly licensed medicines. The Scottish Executive issued a circular in light of the new process of single technology appraisals (PDF 60K) introduced by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence. It says NHS boards are expected to comply with SMC advice even if a NICE appraisal makes different recommendations from those given by the SMC.
