Tribute

Davies In a tribute to the late James John Davies, MARTIN KING, writes:

I was first introduced to James about 18 months ago when he arranged to work on the health care team at the “European scout jamboree”. As James had experience as a pharmacist, I immediately collared him for my supplies and logistics team and it is probably one of the best decisions I have made in recent years. We met in person several months before the jamboree when he came to Cardiff to undertake some training at a local hospital. My first impressions of him were that he was a genuine young man who was willing to help out in whatever way he could and, above all, he was big. He was a quiet lad when you first met him but once he got to know you, his sense of humour showed, and he could give as good as he got.

Over the next few months James was my sounding board. He always considered my ideas thoroughly and if they were rubbish, he was always tactful and polite. When we got to the event itself James really came into his own. People soon realised that he was reliable and resourceful. Numerous times he was sent on a mission to obtain (by fair means obviously) bits of equipment or supplies. I think being six foot, five inches tall and quite charming helped a bit. It certainly helped us, because we rarely needed to borrow ladders to fix things.

We spent nearly three weeks living in each other’s pockets in a field and became really good friends. I had bigger and better plans for James for the “World scout jamboree” to be held next year and we had started to put some of these in place already. Unfortunately this is not to be. You will be missed, big guy, by all the team.
