New post to develop pharmacist prescribing

Pharmacist prescribing is to be developed with the creation of a new post in Scotland.

Annamarie McGregor became NHS Scotland’s pharmacist prescribing co-ordinator last month. Initially, she will identify good practice and lessons learnt from supplementary prescribing across Scotland. The findings will be used to develop both supplementary and independent pharmacist prescribing.

“I would like to identify and support the development of a number of models of practice and networks that enable greater numbers of pharmacists to develop and use prescribing skills in all care settings,” Ms McGregor said.

Over the next year, she will examine obstacles and opportunities for supplementary prescribing in all settings and organise a prescribing conference.

At the moment, she is producing a baseline needs assessment and would welcome contact from pharmacists who would like to discuss prescribing. She can be contacted on tel 0141 282 2238 or by e-mail at anna-marie.mcgregor@isd.csa.scot.nhs.uk
